Akshara Bhandara is run by The Mythic Society, Bengaluru, a registered non-profit founded in 1909. This page says plainly what we collect, why, and what we do not do with it.
What we collect
You can read this page, and the rest of our public pages, without signing in and without telling us anything. The archive itself asks you to sign in. When you do, we collect:
- Your name and email address, from Google if you sign in with Google, or the email address you give us if you sign in with an email link.
- Your approximate location — the city or region your connection appears to come from. Not your precise location.
- Basic usage information — which pages and features you use, how often you sign in, and the kind of device, browser, time zone and language your browser reports.
We do not record detailed activity, and we do not track you across other websites.
Why we ask
This archive is the work of a small team, given away free. Knowing who is using it — students, researchers, teachers, people curious about a stone near their home — is how we understand whether the work is reaching anyone, decide what to build next, and show the people who fund and support the Society that it is being used.
That is the whole reason. We do not sell anything and we have nothing to advertise to you.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your information, and we do not rent or trade it.
- We do not share it with other organisations for their own use.
- We do not send you marketing email. If we ever write to you, it will be about this archive.
Who can see it
Inside the Society, only the small number of people who run Akshara Bhandara can see the sign-in records, through an admin page that requires its own permission.
We use a few outside services to run the site, and your information passes through them because it must: Supabase (sign-in and the user records), Google (if you choose to sign in with Google), Cloudflare (serving the site and its images) and Google Analytics (page-level usage counts). They handle it on our behalf, under their own terms. Nobody else receives it.
How long we keep it
We keep your sign-in record for as long as your account exists, so that you can sign back in and so our usage counts stay meaningful over time. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete the record.
Your choices
Write to us at the address below and you can ask us to tell you what we hold about you, correct it if it is wrong, or delete your account and its record entirely. We will do it. You do not need to give a reason.
Children
Akshara Bhandara is meant for general readers, students and researchers. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has signed in, write to us and we will remove the record.
About the inscriptions themselves
The photographs, readings and find-spot locations in this archive are records of public monuments and are not personal information about you. Where a stone stands on private land or is otherwise sensitive, we withhold its location.
Changes to this page
If we change what we collect, we will change this page and the date at the top of it at the same time.
